I used to deliberately run an open wireless network at home, but eventually it started causing me hassle. Too many of the neighbours were abusing the connection, and that started costing me money. I could have started traffic-shaping unknown users, but that would be complex to set up correctly and would also penalise the visiting friends who I had set up the wifi for in the first place! So, instead (and with regret) I have disabled the open service and moved to a "secured" WPA network instead.
For people who are visiting whom I have invited to use the wireless, I am still happy for you to use the network. Details are:
- ESSID: same as always, the name of the road where I first lived in Cambridge after graduation
- Shared key: my home phone number in Cambridge with all spaces removed (standard UK format including the leading 0 on the STD code).
